MORE ABOUT OAK BAY'S HERITAGE REGISTER
Oak Bay's Community Heritage Register
• is Oak Bay's official list of buildings and sites identified as having heritage value or character
• provides formal recognition for historic places
• is a planning tool for integrating heritage conservation activities into Oak Bay's other land use planning processes
• must be adopted by a local government resolution, and therefore has legal status
A Community Heritage Register does not:
• put a limit on the changes a heritage property owner may make to his or her historic place
• constitute designation or any other type of formal protection of an historic place and does not, in itself, allow for long term protection or prevent demolition of a building
• require agreement from a heritage property owner to include a historic place as a register listing
• create any financial liability for or financially obligate Oak Bay's local government in any way
A Community Heritage Register can:
• provide certainty about what resources constitute the heritage of Oak Bay and,
through Council endorsement, publicly validate the value of listed properties
• enhance Oak Bay's appreciation of the identity and character of our community
• provide a means of informing property owners and prospective buyers of a property's heritage value
• provide a tool for determining eligibility for heritage programs and incentives
• facilitate public access to heritage information
• facilitate the integration of heritage conservation into community planning and play a role in enhancing community sustainability
• assist municipal building department staff with the identification and
proactive management of our community's heritage resources
• allow the municipality to consider and, if necessary, undertake protective action such as temporarily withholding demolition permits and building and development approvals, ordering heritage inspections, or monitoring changes in properties through a licensing and permit application process
